Together, we’ll explore practical ways to incorporate AI throughout the writing process while learning when to trust it, when to question it, and when the best choice is to rely on yourself.
Whether you write for school, work, research, business, or your own projects, you’ll leave with practical strategies you can apply immediately, and a more intentional approach to writing in an AI-assisted world.
WHO THIS COURSE IS FOR
This course is designed for writers who want to use AI thoughtfully while maintaining ownership of their ideas and writing.
It is especially valuable for educators, college and graduate students, professors, professionals, nonprofit staff, entrepreneurs, and small business owners who regularly write, research, or communicate as part of their work.
No previous AI experience is required.

Week 1: THINK BEFORE YOU PROMPT
Using AI as a Thinking Partner
Good AI-assisted writing starts before you ever type a prompt. In this session, we’ll explore what AI can and cannot do and where human judgment belongs in the writing process. You’ll practice using AI to brainstorm, explore ideas, ask better questions, and move your thinking forward without simply handing the thinking over to the tool. We’ll also examine prompting strategies that support stronger writing habits while keeping your ideas, goals, and voice at the center.
Week 2: RESEARCH SMARTER, NOT HARDER
Using AI to Support Research
AI can make research faster, but faster does not necessarily mean better. Learn how to use AI-supported tools to find and organize information, develop stronger research questions, synthesize multiple sources, and navigate literature more efficiently. We’ll also examine credibility, verification, and the importance of going back to original sources so that AI supports your research process without replacing critical evaluation.
Week 3: FROM IDEAS TO DRAFT
Turning Your Thinking into Writing
A blank page can be intimidating, but AI can help you move from scattered thoughts to a more organized draft. Explore ways to use AI to develop outlines, organize information, strengthen arguments, and support drafting while maintaining ownership of what you write. We’ll focus on making intentional choices about when AI is useful, when it is not, and how to keep your authentic voice throughout the drafting process.
Week 4: REVISION IS WHERE WRITING HAPPENS
Using AI for Feedback and Revision
Strong writing rarely emerges from a first draft. In this session, you’ll learn how to use AI as a source of feedback rather than simply asking it to rewrite your work. We’ll explore strategies for identifying gaps, improving clarity, strengthening organization, and evaluating possible revisions. You’ll also practice critically examining AI suggestions so that you remain the decision-maker and every change serves the purpose of your writing.
Week 5: WRITING WITH INTEGRITY
Building Your AI-Assisted Writing Process
Using AI well requires more than knowing which buttons to click. We’ll bring the course together by examining responsible AI use, academic integrity, copyright considerations, verification strategies, and the limitations of AI-generated content. You’ll reflect on what you have learned throughout the course and begin developing a personalized AI-assisted writing workflow that fits your goals, values, and writing needs.
OPTIONAL WEEK 6: PUT IT INTO PRACTICE
Live Capstone Implementation Session (INCLUDED)
You’ve explored how AI can support brainstorming, research, drafting, revision, and responsible writing—now it’s time to apply those strategies to your own work. This optional live capstone session gives you an opportunity to bring questions, challenges, and examples from your own writing projects. Together, we’ll troubleshoot problems, explore additional tools and approaches, share successful workflows, and refine how you use AI in practice.
There is no new required coursework for this session. Instead, it is your opportunity to reconnect, ask the questions that emerged as you began applying what you learned, and leave with greater confidence in the AI-assisted writing process that works for you.

Expert-Backed Content
About the Instructor
Dr. Athena Stanley is the Founder and CEO of Athena Global Learning (AGL) and a Marquette native with more than 16 years of experience in education, curriculum design, and leadership. She holds a PhD in Curriculum, Instruction, and the Science of Learning from the University at Buffalo, State University of New York (2018), and a Master of Arts in Education (2013) and a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education (2010) from Northern Michigan University (NMU).
Dr. Stanley's career spans K–12 education, higher education, curriculum development, educational leadership, and professional learning in the United States, Ecuador, Turkey, and China. Her roles have included Assistant Professor of Applied Workplace Leadership at NMU, English Education Manager, Primary Curriculum Lead, and Head of Grades 3 and 5. Across these roles, she has worked with learners, educators, and professionals across a wide range of ages, backgrounds, and learning environments.
Dr. Stanley specializes in making emerging technologies approachable and useful while keeping human judgment, critical thinking, and responsible use at the center. Through AGL, she develops workshops, learning experiences, and resources that help people build practical skills for an increasingly AI-supported world.
Outside of work, Athena is an enthusiastic traveler who has visited more than 50 countries and loves exploring closer to home, especially around Michigan. She enjoys meeting people and making new connections. She is also an American Council on Exercise (ACE) Certified Personal Trainer who loves running, and she is happiest spending time with her two rescue pups from China, who have traveled a long way with her and are very much part of the family.
